“We don’t make tacos,” says Gabriel Zeller, who will open Avo Modern Mexican (2058 W. 25th St.) in Ohio City together with his partner and wife Julie Mesenburg. “There are a lot of taco places. My taco spots in Sandusky and Amherst are good, but I’ve been working on this menu for quite a while so I went with this concept instead. ”

Zeller and Mesenburg recently took ownership of the Bakersfield Tacos space in Ohio City, which closed in March and never reopened. The owners also run Char in Rocky River, Barra Tacos in Sandusky, and Amherst and Lago, a seasonal restaurant in Marblehead.

If it opens before the end of the year, Avo will offer a more modern approach to modern Mexican food, says Zeller.

“Mexican food is something I’ve always enjoyed cooking since I was a child. It was something my mother and I would do, ”he explains.

These formative experiences were further shaped by recent trips to Dallas, where there is plenty of contemporary Mexican, Tex-Mex, and Latin fusion foods.

Avo will be lunch and dinner to begin with, with the weekend brunch added about a month later. Guests can expect starters like guacamole, charcuterie and ceviche, soups like sopa de lima and main dishes like carne con papas, espresso and filet with chilli grated.

Eight draft beers are accompanied by eight characteristic cocktails.

The room is currently undergoing a major cosmetic renovation, says Zeller.

“We are restoring the floors, repainting the inside and outside, new tables and chairs and redesigning the bar top,” he reports. “I don’t like going into a room that already exists and letting people in and feeling the same everywhere. ”

Regarding opening a restaurant with finer dining options during Covid, Zeller says his other stores are doing reasonably well despite the challenges.

“We did well at our other locations because of Covid,” he says. “The quality of our food and service brings people back.”

For those who prefer to dine at home, there are great takeaway options with contactless roadside pickup, he adds.
