The vehicle parade through Bakersfield honors the late BPD K-9 Jango and raises funds for K-9 resources

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – Community members attended a special parade Saturday to honor the fallen BPD K9 Jango and raise funds for K-9 resources in Kern County.

Jango, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois, was shot dead in southeast Bakersfield on April 27 after being followed by police.

“I was heartbroken when I found out about this,” said Lisa Kendrick, co-founder of Giving Back to the Badge Bakersfield. While the parade of more than two dozen vehicles was dedicated to honoring Jango, Kendrick said it was also about raising awareness of the role of police dogs in law enforcement.

“You’re the first line of defense to stop anyone,” said Kendrick. “You are supposed to save the life of your handler. And that’s exactly what Jango did. He saved his handler’s life. “

Parade participants said they hope to raise funds for other Bakersfield K9s. For this reason the organizers have set up a GoFundMe page. All proceeds go towards resources for BPD K9 units.

“We have to support our police. They need to know we have their backs, ”said Kendrick. “With our group they know that they can rely on us in their need. K9 are very important. I will see to it that they are taken care of. “

BPD says it doesn’t ask for donations directly, but wants to make sure that anyone who wants to donate to the K9 team can do so through the following channels.

To make a tax-deductible donation, please mail a check to:

The department also plans to honor Jango with a memorial service, but the details are still being clarified.
