The town of Bakersfield celebrates 123 years since its inception

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) – The city of Bakersfield celebrates 123 years since it was founded.

On January 11, 1898, the city of Bakersfield was incorporated with around 4,000 residents.

Almost a century and a half later, Bakersfield is now the ninth largest city in California. Almost 400,000 people call the city their home.

The California Department of the Treasury reported last year that Bakersfield grew 1.4% (5,500 residents) year over year. This is the largest growth among the state’s 10 largest cities.

Many may not know that Bakersfield had recorded before.

Bakersfield was first established in 1873, but voters decided to split in 1876. It would not be another 22 years before Bakersfield was founded for a second time, this time on January 11, 1898.

Happy birthday Bakersfield.
