The San Diego Gulls’ playoff hopes came to an end on Monday when the club was eliminated for the second time in a row in extra time and lost 2-1 to the Bakersfield Condors.

Bakersfield won the Pacific Division’s best-of-three semi-final series 2-1 and will face the Henderson Silver Knights in the shortened postseason finals.

For the third time in the series, San Diego opened the scoring.

Trevor Zegras generated sales with an aggressive pre-check that enabled Vinni Lettieri to pick up a loose puck. The first-year seagull faked a shot to freeze the defense before preparing Andrew Agozzino for the tap-in goal, putting San Diego 7:42 ahead.

Former Seagull Adam Cracknell equalized the score for Bakersfield in the middle frame, cleaning up a loose puck to beat a sprawling Lukas Dostal.

However, he was rarely beaten. Bakersfield almost scored the starting goal, three minutes before the end of regular time, but the rookie robbed James Hamblin with a sliding save to keep the 1-1 draw.

“He showed his character and potential in all three games in the playoffs here,” said head coach Kevin Dineen of Dostal. “That’s what we’re talking about. When a child comes out and plays that hard, it is a sign of a bright future. “

Dostal also denied Seth Griffith with a stinging glove that took a little over a minute to play in the third period.

San Diego had multiple chances to win the game in the extra session, but Brad Malone gave Bakersfield the win by clearing a 12:24 rebound opportunity in OT to win the series.

Five of the nine all-time playoff games between San Diego and Bakersfield required overtime to determine a winner – including a 4-OT thriller in 2019.

The Seagulls have fought a 4–1 record in overtime competitions against their rival in the Pacific Division, but maintain a 5-4 overall playoff record against the club.
