New home construction could be on the rise as Bakersfield reports a five-year record in permits processed

New housing permits for the city of Bakersfield, California have hit a five-year high month after month. 1,450 permits were issued in September – the highest number since 2016.

According to Sam Morgen of Bakersfield Californian, the city has seen a surge in demand for new homes. Local brokers reported multiple listings for almost every home on the market. While this could be due to buyers leaving Los Angeles to find larger homes at a lower cost of remote working, Christopher Boyle, director of development services at Bakersfield, said he hadn’t seen the data to support that claim.
