BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – Bakersfield police said a cyclist was killed when he collided head-on with a vehicle on Coffee Road Saturday night.
Officers and emergency services were called to Coffee Road near the Jet Way at around 6.45 p.m.
Bakersfield Police Sgt. Chance Koerner said it appeared that a man riding a bicycle rode north on Coffee Road on his shoulder in the wrong direction. Koerner said the cyclist got into traffic in the outside lane and collided with a driver traveling north on Coffee Road.
The cyclist was thrown from the bike and suffered serious injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene of my medical staff.
Koerner said the cyclist wore dark clothes and it was not immediately known whether the bike had a work light. “I don’t know if it would have made any difference in that case,” he said.
The affected driver was working with investigators and appeared to be exceeding the speed limit at the time of the accident. Drugs or alcohol don’t seem to be factors in the collision, Koerner said.
Kern County’s coroner office will identify the cyclist at a later date.
