Gauchos are finally returning home

Friday’s competition marks the first time the gauchos have come home in over a month. The club last hosted a game on Jan. 16, an 84-53 UC-San Diego loss as a heavy 12.5-point chalk, but had two dates with Long Beach State later in the month when the beach took a two-week break lodged due to COVID-19.

10 straight wins for @UCSBbasketball as Big West Hawai’i’s leading gauchos overtook 81-74 in overtime.
The school record for victories in a row is 11.
UCSB is 14-3 and 8-2 in the league.

Amadou Sow: 16 points

A stretch of six road competitions did not slow UCSB as Team SU and 5-1 ATS remained undefeated. In fact, the gauchos have regularly beaten up conference opponents. The team has scored nine or more points in five of its eight meetings with Big West rivals during its current 10-game winning streak.

Jaquori McLaughlin leads a gauchos offensive that ranks 37th in the nation with 79.1 points per game, beating that total in six of seven games. McLaughlin had a team-strong performance of 19 points in UCSB’s 81:74 win in Hawaii last weekend, averaging 18 points per game in the last six games. And the great junior Amadou Sow has found his offensive touches. The team’s rebound leader averaged 13.1 points in the last eight games and recorded four doubles doubles during that stretch.

Roadrunners who pay dividends along the way

While the glowing gauchos have caught the attention of the AP’s top 25 voters, the Roadrunners arrive in town just one game back in the Big West to beat their recent mediocre game on the road. The team dominated last weekend in a two-game game against UC-San Diego on the home court, but switched between wins and losses in the last four street appointments, setting a 6-6 SU away record this season. The Roadrunners have remained a solid bet on the road, however, with each of their six wins being wagered as underdogs.

Do you know what is impressive? The fact that CSU Bakersfield (@CSUB_MBB) is 10-5 overall, ranks 2nd in the Big West, and keeps opponents at just 60 ppg … and only has ONE player who averages double-digit ppg (Taze Moore, 11 ppg ).

– Richie Schueler (@RichieSchueler) January 28, 2021

With leading scorer Taze Moore averaging just 11.4 points per game, the Roadrunners had to get offensive contribution from the top and bottom of the line-up. The team averaged just 67.7 points per game during their 3-0 SU run, but closed the gap with a solid defensive game. CSU Bakersfield have allowed fewer than 60 points per game in the last three games and have limited their opponents to under 60 points a total of eight times this season, including four times on the road. This avarice extends to dates with the gauchos.

The Roadrunners have abandoned two out of three UCSB encounters of all time but kept things close, not beating by just six points in those competitions and limiting the gauchos to just 63 points per game. But while CSU Bakersfield is likely to be a frustrating opponent, the Roadrunners are unlikely to stop the best team in the Big West.

The choice: Gauchos -8.5 (-110); UNDER 130.5 (-110)
