Bakersfield’s Fb group spreads pleasure with painted stones

BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA. – Sometimes all you need is a little paint and a stone to start someone’s day.

“I went shopping and when I got out of my car I saw something at the base of a tree and I went over to see what it was and it was a rock with a little turtle on it,” said Lashawnna Gleghorn.

Lawshanna is just one of the many Bakersfield residents to come across a painted rock, as in the video above. The Bakersfield CA Rocks Facebook group hides them so others can find them.

“I thought that was the most amazing thing. People paint stones to make people happy, “she said.

Lashawnna joined the group and is now hiding stones herself. Rosemarie Guerra, a member of the group, said she found her first stone in a particularly tough week. It made her day and inspired her to join the group.

“You see a lot of people who [are] smiled and said, ‘Thank you. You saved my day.’ I posted there and actually became part of the group. I started painting and wanted to hide my own stones and bring joy to other people, “said Rosemarie.

She said it was rewarding to make people feel the way she did when she found her first stone.

“When people send me messages just telling me, ‘You know what? I had a bad day myself and you brought joy to my face, to the faces of my children. ‘ [it] I felt good because they felt the same joy that I felt when I found this stone one day, “said Rosemarie.

If you find a stone, you can keep it or hide it again. Lawshanna said the Facebook group has a real sense of community.

“It’s fun to meet new people and put a smile on people’s faces. I’m really enjoying it, “said Lawshanna.

And Rosemarie said it was special during the pandemic. She really can’t go out right now because of heart and lung problems. This group gave her the opportunity to be creative while staying safe.

“We start painting and then you come closer as a family like me and my children. We can start painting again. It gives us something to do, “she said.

Lawshanna said she hopes the group makes Bakersfield a little lighter.

“We just want to make people happy. There’s so much going on these days and I know people have a hard time so we just want to bring some joy into people’s lives, “she said.
