Bakersfield woman arrested in connection with fatal accident in 2019

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KERO) – Bakersfield Police Department arrested a fatal accident that happened nearly two years ago.

According to BPD, Edith Mata, 24, from Bakersfield was arrested for beating and killing a man who rode a bicycle on the 1000 block of Kentucky Street on September 7, 2019.

At the time of the original accident, according to the BPD, officers reacted to the scene where they found the body of a man on the street around 9:20 p.m. BPD said a vehicle hit the man and then fled the scene. The man was later hit by a second vehicle, and that driver stopped and called the police. The second driver was involved in the investigation.

The police later published a description of the suspect’s vehicle as a newer model Kia Rio (2011-2017), silver-colored, without a passenger mirror and wiper blade.

Mata was eventually identified as a driver through a tap on the Kern Secret Witness line. She is facing charges of hit and escape causing death.
