Bakersfield Police Department released a video of the incident in which the suspect K9 officer was dead
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – The Bakersfield Police Department released a body camera video showing the final moments of K9 officer Jango and Dalton Kooiman, the 20-year-old Bakersfield man accused of killing the police dog on April 27th have held on.
Kooiman was allegedly in a reported stolen vehicle and was unable to give in to officers on Highway 58 east of Cottonwood Road. BPD said Kooiman drove the car through a fence and into a concrete wall onto the freeway embankment before walking to a neighborhood in southeast Bakersfield.
Kooiman was followed to a courtyard on Feliz Drive and Simon Drive. The video shows Officer Brock Mueller, Jango’s handler, climbing a fence behind Jango when gunfire can be heard. Mueller returns fire several times and kills Kooiman.
Jango was taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment but died.
Officer Mueller and Officer Johnny Moreno have both been placed on routine administrative leave while the shooting is being investigated. Officer Müller has been an officer in the department for about 5 years and, according to the BPD, Officer Moreno has been an officer in the department for about 6 years.
